A renter's added architectural details

Here's a pic of my little cave.  The mantel in the Murphy bed cutout, the added shelves above the half-height built ins, & the molding around the mirror were inexpensive ways to gussy up the apartment without anything but a few screw and boards. I found the mantel on Craigslist for less than $50 and the molding/screws/shelves were less than $30 at Home Depot. In all, it made a huge difference in my little square of a studio.

Here in the postage stamp bathroom is my effort at a mini spa. I lined the tub with black stones and secured them with a bit of scrap molding.

  1. Well done! I found this via your comment on Apartment Therapy where you asked for suggestions. In my opinion, the only thing marring your spa is the medicine cabinet. Could you replace it or add some wood around it?

  2. Thanks Jessica! I can't change the cabinet; my landlords won't even let me paint! I did use pink duct tape & wood colored contact paper to hide the awful rusted out interior. I'll add a new photo to show.

  3. I also found your blog via AT, from your comment on the dual spaces thread. I just wanted to say that putting a mantel in the cutout was brilliant! It does so much for the room, I can't believe I've never seen your idea in action elsewhere. You should definitely submit your place as an AT tour. Cheers

  4. Thanks Noelle! I was lucky in finding a cheap craigslist mantel that matched the existing trim. I didn't even need to paint it, just tacked it up with a couple of screws. It seemed like such a radical change at the time. Now, I can't image the space without it!
