Small Cool Rejects

Hello lovely internet people!

I'm excited that it's the time of year for Apartment Therapy's Small Cool Contest when hundreds of average people submit photos of their homes for our viewing pleasure.  As y'all know, I like to rearrange stuff in my apartment and try new ways to decorate/organize/create comfort in my little nest.  It's inspiring to peek at the different ways other people people do the same.

Last year, I was fortunate to have my entry selected to participate in the contest. I have my fingers crossed that the powers that be at AT will see something worthy in this years entry.  As you know, we're only limited to 5 photos to represent our home and anyone who is a bohemian maximalist knows that that is no where near enough to show off all the pretties.

So here I present to you, the photos I've taken that did not make the cut. Cheers!

P.S. If my entry is selected to participate, I'll add the link to this post so anyone in the mood can vote for me!

    1. Thanks for your vote! I'm thrilled that my entry was chosen to compete... I had lost some hope as the weeks went by.

  2. Well, I didn't try to disguise the fact I'm disappointed Sammy didn't make the cut...again *sigh*. Feel better now that I've seen him here though. Seriously, he missed me. Fingers crossed I don't get banned this time for my tongue in cheek remark although I took precautions and posted a disclaimer along with. Lesson learned.

I've scrolled through the pics several times here and see something new every time. It's like a treasure hunt, each time more wonderful than the one before. Praying you take the top prize this year. Best wishes in all your endeavors. Don't know how you find the time..

    1. I'm so bad at posting updates. I'll try to do a bit more with the little changes that I make. (laugh) Even now, my main room is rearranged again. When the contest is over, I'll show the new... Sammy sits front and center!

  3. I voted for you on Apartment Therapy and am thrilled to find this blog with more pictures of your stunning home. You are the very epitome of a Maximalist Bohemian! If you are not featured in Justina Blakeney's new book, you should have been!

It is fascinating to see all your different furniture arrangements and tweaks. I'm a person who settles on one furniture arrangement and almost never changes it. But, like you, I love displaying family memorabilia and thrift store finds.

I'll be back to look at these photos again and again, as I plan to steal many of your ideas. Orchids from Trader Joe's! Stained glass panels and witch balls! More mirrors! And (simple genius), cup hooks to train pothos. (90% of my plants are pothos.)

Thanks so much for sharing your home with us internet strangers.

    1. I have 2 problems: 1. I hoard plants and 2. I'm constantly rearranging furniture as a procrastination technique for avoiding studying. I officially apologize to my neighbors for every finals week I've ever had. Thanks for your compliments! It's awesome to think that someone gets some use of my OTTGOPs (offerings to the gods of procrastination). Tip on the cup hooks: i've started using the clear stick on hooks (any hardware store) to avoid holes.

  4. Hi Kate!
Love your place! It's so cozy and inviting. Amazing.
My Mom has a green thumb just like you. I remember growing up in a 'jungle' because she had so many plants in the house. Unfortunately, she lost all of her plants years ago when she moved to a new place that only had northern exposures.
I had a question about one of your plants; specifically the plant in the 2nd photo in this post. The one with the big leaves? Can you tell me what kind of plant this is? My Mom had a couple years ago, but she called them 'rubber plants'. and I know that's not the actual name of the plant.
Thanks so much for your help!

    1. Hi renhalz! Thanks for your compliments. The plant is the dieffenbachia, aka the dumb cane plant. It's a beautifully hearty plant that tolerates even my levels of neglect. Word to the wise, if you find it at one of the box stores (HD, Lowes) isolate it for a couple of weeks to make sure no mealy bugs hitched a ride. - Cheers
